Gas Reduction Process

Picture
After glazing my pots I load them into a 40 cubic foot gas kiln.  The kiln fires to cone 10 or approximately 2300 degrees.  The kiln is fired slightly starving it of oxygen.  It takes anywhere from 8 - 12 hours for fire and 2 days for it to cool down enough for it to be opened.  Its always a surprise to open the kiln.  There are so many variables with this type of firing that can affect how the glaze chemicals interact with each other.  For this reason it is very difficult to exactly reproduce two pieces to look the same even when using the same glazes.
